Lanap® FAQs in New Braunfels, TX

Dr. Todd Smith and Dr. Michael Cole offer laser gum disease treatment in New Braunfels, TX for patients suffering from bleeding gums and bad breath. Before going forward with the Laser-Assisted new Attachment Procedure (LANAP®), patients should read the following questions and answers:

What is Lanap®?

LANAP® is a periodontal therapy used to treat moderate to severe periodontal disease (gum disease). It utilizes a dental laser called Periolase MVP-7, manufactured by Millennium Dental Technologies, Inc. LANAP® is used in gum disease treatment in the New Braunfels, TX area by Dr. Smith and Dr. Cole.

How does it work?

LANAP® is a gum disease and bad breath treatment using gentle laser removal of necrotic tissues that lie in the spaces between the teeth and the gums. Bacteria that reside in these areas can produce toxins, causing our bodies to destroy the structures that support the teeth. This infection can invade the bone, causing bone loss. Once the dead tissue is removed, the laser stimulates the production of collagen and fibrin, causing a clot to form. This clot, along with the gum tissue, is gently pressed against the tooth at each treated site to form a seal, in an effort to block the entrance of gum disease-causing bacteria.

Is it safe?

LANAP® has been cleared by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for the treatment of periodontal disease, or gum disease. This treatment modality does not require cutting, of “flapping” of the gums as in traditional periodontal surgery. Therefore, sutures are not necessary and the risk of secondary infection is minimized.

Will I Feel Pain?

Local anesthetic is provided for your comfort prior to beginning laser treatment. General anesthesia is not required, and you should expect no more discomfort during the procedure than you would if you were having a simple filling.

How do I know if I am a candidate of this treatment?

Gum disease can cause signs and symptoms such as tender, bleeding and swollen gums, loose teeth and even bad breath. These conditions can necessitate the need for both bleeding gums and bad breath treatment. In order to determine if LANAP® if right for you, call Dr. Smith and Dr. Cole to schedule an appointment for your periodontal, or gum disease, screening.
